Opportunity Snapshot

In addition to enjoying a great deal of autonomy in this position, you will have the opportunity to make an impact at a sales-oriented company -- most of our senior executives started in sales -- from developing locally tailored trainings to ensuring our curriculum and resources employ best practices, particularly with regard to eLearning. You'll interact with a wide variety of people at HUB, from regional Chief Sales Officers to outside reps. HUB is growing, even while others are cutting back, and we're looking for people with the potential to grow with us.

You will design and facilitate training programs for sale professionals, developing and delivering content in both group and one-on-one settings. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid experience in training, preferably including sales training, and knowledge of web-based training tools. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in sales and/or management. We're looking for a results oriented professional with extremely effective presentation and facilitation skills. You also will need to be able to travel nationally up to 50% of the time.

HUB International Limited is the world's tenth largest insurance brokerage, providing a broad array of property and casualty, life and health, employee benefits, reinsurance, investment and risk management products and services via offices throughout the US and Canada. Our culture places a high value on initiative, autonomy, and accountability.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Experience with both developing content and delivering that content.
  • Excellent speaking and facilitating skills, including the ability to bring out ideas from groups.
  • Demonstrated effective coaching skills as well as a passion for coaching.
  • A strong business orientation, including a practical understanding of both revenue and profitability.
  • Strong technology skills across Microsoft products, most importantly PowerPoint.
  • Flexibility and quick thinking, including the ability to improvise learning approaches to maximize effectiveness.
  • A balanced approach to staying abreast of current issues both in business and in training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work with and establish credibility with all levels of employees, including senior management.
  • Proven success at being continually effective in an environment that requires self-motivation and self-management.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentations, training collaterals, articles, and other text.
  • Strong organization and time management skills, including a detail orientation.
Preferred but not required:
  • Web-based training development experience.
  • Knowledge of insurance products.
  • Experience with MS SharePoint.
Our preference is that you be based in the Chicago area, near our corporate headquarters, but this could be a home-based role just about anywhere in the US, as long as you are near a major airport. If you live somewhere other than Chicago, you will need to travel to the corporate office about once a month in addition to your other travels.

What's in It for You

Strong resources, new frontiers -- while we have solid training programs and tools in place that you can build on (for example, HUB Academy is a four-month program for new Account Executives covering product knowledge, sales, and account management), you also will be able to showcase your innovation in helping develop new curriculum and resources.

Diverse challenges, entrepreneurial energy -- our regions and even our local offices maintain a degree of autonomy, and you will take on a steady stream of unique challenges, tailoring materials and delivery to local market needs. One thing is common across all HUB locations: the environment is fast-paced, creative, and always interesting.

Career development -- you'll acquire a broad view of our entire organization, and particularly of the dynamics "where the rubber hits the road," where sales actually happen. Your success in this role, combined with the knowledge you'll gain, will set you up to pursue career opportunities within the Training and Education Department or other areas of our organization.

Growing strong -- everyone has been impacted by the current economic climate, but HUB continues to grow and maintain a very high customer retention rate. After all, people and businesses still need insurance.

Excellent compensation -- we offer competitive compensation and, as you might expect from an insurance broker, our benefits are very competitive, and many include pre-tax advantages.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the Director of Training and Education, you will assume ownership of all facets of our sales training. You'll invest a significant portion of your time traveling to various locations to consult with local sales management, and to design and deliver training on a variety of levels.

While we will provide you with the orientation and learning you need to become familiar with our company, we'll also look to you to hit the ground running in several areas, such as:
  • Reviewing our existing materials to identify opportunities to improve them.
  • Developing webinar materials, and then building on that to take over leadership of the administration and promotion of our eLearning site.
  • Reaching out to the Chief Sales Offices (CSOs) in all our Hubs -- regional and local offices -- to start establishing consultative relationships.
Training activities will include group settings as well as a good number of one-on-one sessions. You will have existing materials at your disposal but you'll also have opportunities to tailor those materials, combine materials from multiple courses, and develop content from scratch. In addition, your activities will include:
  • Building out our web-based learning program and promoting it across the organization.
  • Coordinating the development of feedback tools and ensuring we make the most of that feedback to improve our efforts on an ongoing basis.
  • Marketing the training programs to the CSOs.
  • Planning and executing recorded interviews with top sales performers.
  • Setting up and facilitating webinars and conference calls.
  • Staying knowledgeable on the most up-to-date thinking around training and sales techniques.
  • And more.

Keys to Success

To excel in this role you will take a proactive approach to establishing your credibility and ability to add value to our sales professionals, from the "feet on the street" to the CSOs, many of whom have years of experience in insurance sales. In our entrepreneurial culture we don't have highly structured, black and white policies, and those who thrive at HUB have a strong sense of ownership and accountability, and enjoy the opportunity to identify and pursue new ideas. In addition, in order to be an outstanding Sales Trainer, you will:
  • Share ideas freely through collaboration and persuasion.
  • Analyze reality in the field and respond accordingly.
  • Embrace a leadership style based on "serving to lead," acting as a resource to the sales organization.
  • Be driven to achieve goals independently.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
