Opportunity Snapshot

If you are an insurance sales professional with an executive flair for planning and building business, this position offers you the unique opportunity to leverage an established $2.5 million book of business and grow it into a major regional operation. We understand what you need to succeed: most of our senior leaders started as producers and built HUB into a major player on the insurance brokerage scene -- and that's just what you'll do in the southeastern region. Of course, you'll have the support and resources of the world's tenth largest insurance brokerage (including a broad portfolio to reach a diverse array of customers), but we're still looking for the same startup spirit that has driven HUB's success from the beginning.

Your mission will be to develop and execute a business plan -- including building the team you need -- to grow both personal and commercial business in this region to $10 million and beyond. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have significant commercial sales experience in insurance brokerages and a track record of success in sales management. You also will need solid skills in budgeting and finance, as well as in creating, executing, and monitoring performance to plans. We're looking for a highly entrepreneurial professional with a strong sense of ethics as well as outstanding leadership skills, including the ability to motivate and influence others.

HUB International Limited is the world's eighth largest insurance brokerage, providing a broad array of property and casualty, life and health, employee benefits, reinsurance, investment and risk management products and services via offices throughout the US and Canada. We are growing, even while others are cutting back. Our culture places a high value on initiative, autonomy, and accountability.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

The ideal candidate for this position is the individual who enjoys the sales process, but is even more driven to be in the decision maker's chair and build a business. In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • Active Property & Casualty and Life & Health licenses in your state of residence.
  • Solid organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to develop and implement processes, procedures, and systems (infrastructure models are readily available, and some is already in place, although you will ensure you have the right infrastructure for your region).
  • The ability to understand a large number of products and services, and a willingness to learn on an ongoing basis.
  • Big picture vision as well as robust attention to details.
  • Drive, determination, and self-motivation.
  • A high degree of comfort with ambiguity and minimal structure.
Preferred but not required:
  • Industry certification such as CIC, CPCU, or CRM.
  • Experience selling personal insurance lines.
  • Experience with insurance carriers.
You might work out of existing HUB offices in Plantation, FL or Charlotte, NC, or you might work out of a home office in the Atlanta, GA area. Wherever you are based, you can expect to travel up to 50% of the time.

What's in It for You

Own the impact -- some of our senior executives started HUB by selling insurance out of the trunks of their cars. Today HUB International is comprised of several regional brokerage networks we call "hubs." In essence you'll be doing the same thing: building a regional business that, eventually, will become a hub. You'll have a lot more resources than the trunk of your car, but you'll still be the driving force behind building a $10 million business.

Broad portfolio, untapped potential customers -- your business plan will be able to leverage products and services from all insurance markets, enabling you and the team you build to offer full service solutions tailored to targeted industries. You'll also have access to an extensive network of subject matter expertise within HUB.

Sales at the center -- HUB is a sales-oriented company, and we'll make sure you have the support you need and the "elbow room" to be successful. Our environment is fast-paced, creative, and always interesting.

Growing strong -- everyone has been impacted by the current economic climate, but HUB continues to grow and maintain a very high customer retention rate. After all, people and businesses still need insurance.

Excellent compensation -- we offer competitive compensation, including a generous performance-base bonus and, as you might expect from an insurance broker, our benefits are very competitive, and many include pre-tax advantages.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

You will report to the President of HUB Personal Insurance, but we'll look to you to operate with a great deal of independence. Currently this region includes $2.5 million in personal lines commission managed by a service staff of about 10. We previously had a commercial network in this region, sold it, and are now looking to grow organically, expanding the personal business and adding commercial.

In a nutshell, you will develop the business plan and put it into play. A model that has worked well in the past involves building business around yourself, acting as a producer, and then bringing on staff as you grow. We also expect your plan to include prospecting mergers and acquisitions. Of course, we're open to your ideas as well. Whatever the specifics, the plan will include expanding our personal lines as well as establishing a commercial book of business, including building the infrastructure, growing a sales team and support staff, establishing targets and performance metrics, developing budgets and forecasts, and more.

The timeline we envision, which you will help refine, is that within the first three to six months you'll have conducted market research and be putting the final touches on your business plan. Within three to five years we anticipate that the business will have doubled, and within a few years of that you should reach $10 million. This is the milestone at which a network typically becomes an official hub. From day one, however, you'll have resources from other areas within HUB.

In the final analysis, HUB's success is relationship based, and pivotal to your success will be the ability of you and your team to develop relationships with clients from the start, discovering their goals and challenges. In addition, you will need to foster strong working relationships with carriers.

Keys to Success

In our entrepreneurial culture we don't have highly structured, black and white policies, and this environment is not for everybody. Those who thrive at HUB have a strong sense of ownership and accountability, and enjoy the opportunity to identify and pursue new ideas. Moreover, this is a start up scenario, and that always involves challenges. However, if you're the person we're looking for, these challenges will sound more like opportunities. To excel in this role you will:
  • Achieve your goals with a great deal of autonomy while keeping the President in the loop.
  • Drive to results, including making sound decisions even in the absence of all the facts.
  • Provide the vision and business savvy, but also act as the "cheerleader" for your growing team.
  • Make prudent use of your resources, including building collaborative relationships with your remote sources of support. You will have resources, to be sure, but HUB runs lean and we all focus on doing more with less.
  • Take a proactive approach to networking, including participating in community associations and leveraging social networking tools.
  • Stay current on industry and market trends.
If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
